MY FRIEND, MARCEL (2021)

My Friend, Marcel was an award-winning short film I made in January 2021.

We were in a nation-wide lockdown and covid was at its worst. Much like the rest of the world, I felt trapped and demotivated. I decided to channel this into a new short film. Set in a lockdown, this film tackled the negative mental effects of isolation, as well as the problems of trying maintain relationships at the same time.

JESSICA (2022)

I directed and co-edited Jessica for my final year film for university, which was released in May 2022.

This film is 18 minutes of unrelenting chaos.

This was a really tough, but rewarding, project. We shot 17 locations and 9 actors in 4 days. It was a scheduling nightmare, but with the help and dedication of my producer and the rest of the team, the project was completed!

The film itself has a strong amateurish presentation. I had recently experimented with this idea in another short film, Wrong Fucking Place, which had a similar plot, but was used as a proof of concept. I wanted to see if amateur filmmaking had a direct link to believability. I believe Wrong Fucking Place proved this theory, and was subsequently implemented in Jessica.

WRONG FUCKING PLACE (2022)

Wrong Fucking Place was a proof of concept short film I made in January 2022.

The majority of the film was shot on a Canon Powershot, a small, consumer digital camera. Through its amateurish look and guerrilla execution, the narrative of this short film felt more real than anything I'd made before.

Its purpose was to prove that amateurish filmmaking had a direct link to believability.

FATHER AND SON (2020)

Father and Son was a short animated project I made in October 2020.

The goal of this story was to question the world's reliance on assumptions.

Assumptions feed on our laziness, but it's understandable why they're relied upon in daily life. The survival of our species is reliant on assumptions.

GRUMBLEWEED, EXTRAORDINAIRE, AND STRANGE PERSON (2020)

Grumbleweed, Extraordinaire and Strange Person was a short documentary I edited in June 2020.

It was an honour to interview the comedy legend Robin Colvill at his house in Wakefield. I gained considerable insight into editing workflows, and this project further cemented my love for video editing. I was required to animate certain sections too, which I believe gave the documentary an interesting structure.

Looking back at it now, I can see how much I've improved in the last 2 years. Although I may now cringe at some of the edits I did for this project, it was still a very beneficial learning opportunity.

KEFALONIA HOLIDAY VIDEO (2020)

This was a family holiday video that I made in my free time to test my editing capability, as well as just to have some fun.

I made this in October 2020.

The crucial element of shooting this video was my use of sync sound. I often recorded my sound on a separate microphone, which I then could sync up with the video in post. Planning for this made my turnaround so much faster.

GET DOWN (2020)

Get Down was a short animated project I made in April 2020.

This video was part of an animated collection on my YouTube channel. Although I am very happy with those other videos, this one was definitely my favourite.

It's simple, quick, funny, and unsettling by the end. I tried a new style with this animation. Portions of the background were free flowing, and you'd only see what's necessary for the narrative to progress. It was an almost dreamlike presentation.

BIRD (2) (2019)

Bird (2) was a short animated project I made in December 2019.

I'm so proud of the work I put into this project. Looking back at it now, the video itself is ok, but what I love about it is my memories of my work ethic for the entire project. I animated each character and location with a half-broken laptop trackpad. It was kind of ridiculous how janky the entire workflow was, but what was important was that I kept going. I had such passion for this project that I didn't care about the hardware I was using, or my lack of expertise. My confidence in the idea is what fuelled me.

Another of this project's challenges was to convey an entire story without any dialogue. This was a tough restriction, but one that I forced myself to stick to because I wanted that challenge.

Overall, I'm really happy with this project!

NET YORK (2020)

Net York was a short animated project I made in June 2020.

This video originated from a stupid joke about misspelling "New York".

I had nothing on for 3 days, so I just cracked this animation out and was done with it. The time consuming part was the lip-syncing. I had done this before in previous animations, but the length of the dialogue sequences in this video proved to be quite exhausting to animate. Moving forward, I simplified my lip-syncing technique. Before this, I would draw a new mouth for every frame, but my new technique is to draw individual mouth shapes which can later be reused, saving time. I implemented this on my most recent animation, Father and Son.
